The Top Seven Questions I Get Asked as a Freelance Copywriter

This is an image with a caption.

I’m fairly certain my family still doesn’t know what I do as a freelance copywriter. And to be honest, I get it. I didn’t really understand what copywriting was until I was doing it.

My quick backstory: I started copywriting while working as a certified ophthalmic assistant (COA), writing blogs for eye doctors. I loved breaking down complicated subjects into easy reading material. But at the time, I didn’t understand how it helped on Google searches.

Then I immersed myself in learning everything I could about copywriting. I started doing it as a side hustle because it brought me so much joy.

I had my first baby in April 2020 (yikes!) and pretty much as soon as I became a mom — my passion spread into the parenting space. With a new baby, side hustle, and world pandemic – I decided to start Lauren Whaley Agency!

With years of experience under me now, I’m collaborating with great companies who are helping others. I work with doctors, scientists, lactation consultants, sleep consultants, and more. If you’re helping parents or kids, I can help you! I provide the support and valuable content parents desperately need and can rely on.

After reading this blog, you should have a solid understanding of content marketing and what working with me looks like!

  1. What is Copywriting?

When a lot of people hear ‘copywriting’ they think of ‘copyright’. “Copyrights” allow you to own the things you create under them.

Copywriting – in the most simple definition, is words that get people to take action.

Copywriting is legitimately everywhere you look, from billboards, and websites, to blogs. The most important part of copywriting is it’s meant to help you grow your company by people taking action. Captivating copy can influence your audience to book a consultation, purchase your products, or sign up for your newsletter.

2. What Is SEO and How Does It Work?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Its goal is to improve your ranking on search engines like Google or Bing. Ha, just kidding. Who uses Bing?

Multiple factors play a role in terms of SEO. There are special words or strings of words that people use when searching for your brand. For example, if you’re a lactation consultant – ‘lactation’ and ‘lactation consultant’ are BIG keywords!

SEO changes your ranking on Google based on detailed algorithms that nobody completely understands. As a copywriter, it’s my job to do consumer research to find out what people are searching for when it comes to your brand and mission.

I take that information and incorporate the most effective keywords into the copy I write for you. As a result, your company ranks higher on Google for certain words and word combinations people are searching for.

Other factors that play into SEO include:

  • Formatting

  • Consistency

  • Engaging content

  • Backlinks

  • Internal links

  • Title tags

  • Length of content

  • And more...

The SEO process is one that many companies simply hope or assume they’re doing right. When you work with me,  you will not have to hope or assume as the results will speak for themselves

3. How Does Content Marketing Work for My Business?

Content marketing can seem confusing and almost gimmicky at times. But in reality, it’s a strategic way to have your business work for you.

When you build a website and use those vital SEO keywords, they’re going to help your ranking on Google.

Did you know 75% of people never scroll past the first page of search engines aka Google? [1] You want your brand and mission to show up on the first page!

A good Google ranking means:

  • More people find you online

Essentially you’ll be accomplishing your business mission!

Providing engaging content for your audience gives them a reason to come back to your site. It helps you build authority in your area of expertise. When people build trust with your brand online, they’ll have the confidence to use your services or products.

The content we have covered so far may seem overwhelming. Fortunately for you, this is not only my career but also my passion — I am here to help! Let's look at a few examples of copy.

If your goal is to boost organic traffic to your website, blogging is great for this. I will write informative, engaging content on various topics related to your brand. Monthly blogs help increase your organic traffic by utilizing SEO and bringing people back every week.

If your current services or products aren’t seeing desired sales numbers, the issue may be your landing or website pages. may need new and updated content. I’d recommend sprucing up your landing pages and a few website pages to start. Creating that SEO-optimized content will drive traffic up and ultimately sales.

It’s critical your ideal audience's pain points are addressed and that they understand the unique value you bring to help them. A product or service is meant to solve a problem, so I’ll show them how you do it!

The avenues for content marketing are vast. I’m here to make the process simple and get you results.

5. Are Blogs Still Relevant and Can They Really Help My Business?

Blogs are not dead. I’ll say it a little louder for people in the back – BLOGS ARE NOT DEAD.

I’m not sure who started this rumor, but shame on them.

Blogs are incredibly helpful when it comes to establishing your brand authority. Blogs make people trust you because you’re helping your audience understand something that’s relevant to them. You’re providing value that feels essentially free.

But as a copywriter, I make sure all of your blogs have a call to action. This leads to more consults being booked, more products being sold, more followers on Instagram, or whatever your business goals are.

6. How Does the Content End up on My Website?

99% of the time the responsibility of uploading content falls to web developers, someone else on your team, or you (go small business owners and entrepreneurs!).

In very rare circumstances, I upload content for my clients. This costs an additional fee and I’m only familiar with a few website platforms. Ask me more about this on our call!

7. What Does Working with Me (A Copywriter) Look Like?

One of my favorite questions and for good reason! If you’ve never worked with a copywriter, you might not know exactly what we do. Or maybe you’ve had a negative experience in the past. I swear I’m not like the others!

Here’s a little breakdown of what working with me looks like:

  1. We jump on a call to talk about your goals and mission as a company. We discuss where you need help and what my recommendations are.

  2. I send a follow-up email after our call. I outline a test project idea and give you a content strategy sample with different directions we could take.

  3. We start with a test project! This is valuable for both of us to make sure we’re a good fit to work on larger projects or continued work. We need to communicate well, trust each other, and work together. A test project is something small, like 1 web page or blog. After the invoice is paid, I let you know the date I can deliver the first draft to you.

  4. I write the copy for the agreed-upon test project. Sometimes I need your help (with an “About” page for example, I need to know about… well, you!) and other times I’m good to go. I work my magic! Read more about what all my content includes here!

  5. I submit the copy to your email using Google Docs. You can comment, edit, and make suggestions on what you would like changed. I included one round of edits with my work. This allows me to nail down your voice and brand based on your feedback.

  6. I make all the updates from your requests. Once the second submission is delivered to you, our test project is complete.

  7. We go from there! This can be large website projects, ongoing blogs, landing pages, sales funnels, and more. It depends on your needs and goals as a company.

Why Should You Work With a Copywriter?

People don’t ask me this one, but I’m going to tell you anyway. I’m not even going to sugar coat it – the biggest reason companies book my services is because they do not have enough time to do all of this – the consumer research, finding sources, writing engaging copy, creating a content plan, and the sheer time it takes to write all of it.

Working with a copywriter is an investment. SEO can take time to work but you have to trust the process. And that’s exactly what it is, a process.

But it works.

I grew a company’s website traffic by over 200% in a few months. I’m currently watching one of my clients climb the Google rankings. (He’ll be on the first page for his field soon!) Another client increased sales of their biggest service by almost 300% in one quarter.

So besides saving time, working with a copywriter helps your business grow. I mean you read some of my stats, what would that do for your company?

I sincerely hope you feel more informed about what a copywriter does and how it all works. If you’re looking for a reliable, high-quality writer — I might be the perfect fit!
